This 5-hour tour covers Cozumel's main cultural and coastal highlights in a private vehicle — a full-size minivan for groups up to 12, a six-seat minivan, or a four-passenger jeep. The route follows four stops in sequence with enough time at each to actually look around, not just photograph. Starting from $199, it works as a standalone Cozumel day trip from Riviera Maya or as a full-island circuit for cruise passengers.
The first stop is San Gervasio, the largest Mayan archaeological site on the island. It served as a ceremonial center dedicated to Ixchel, a Mayan deity associated with the moon and fertility, drawing pilgrims from across the Yucatan peninsula through the pre-Columbian period. The ruins are set in low jungle and easy to walk at a relaxed pace. After San Gervasio, the route continues to Downtown Cozumel and the Municipal Market — a working neighborhood market where local residents shop for produce, seafood, and dry goods. This is a reliable place to find locally made items at non-tourist prices; cash in pesos is useful here.
The final leg runs along Cozumel's undeveloped eastern shore, the Caribbean-facing coast with no hotel or resort development. It's one of the more distinctive things to do in Cozumel for travelers who want to see past the cruise pier corridor — open shoreline, a handful of open-air restaurants, and a road that most visitors on standard group tours never reach.
San Gervasio opens at 8 AM and draws the smallest crowds before 10 AM — book the earliest departure if you want the ruins to yourself. The Municipal Market is most active mid-morning on weekdays. Bring cash in pesos for both the market and east-side lunch stops; card readers are uncommon in either location. Reef-safe sunscreen is required by Cozumel law in marine-adjacent areas.
Most Cozumel day trips stop well short of the island's east side — that undeveloped Caribbean coastline with no hotels, no cruise crowds, just open shoreline and a handful of outdoor restaurants that most group tours never reach. This private minivan or jeep tour of Cozumel actually goes there. If seeing the island past the pier corridor is the whole point, this is the one.
