Puerto Morelos sits on Highway 307, 35 km south of Cancún and 34 km north of Playa del Carmen, and Cancún airport is just 18 km to the north. The town has two parts: the beach town by the sea, and La Colonia (also called El Crucero), about 2 km inland by the highway. If you want to walk to the sand, stay in the beach town. Getting here is easy: ADO runs from the airport, and the Tren Maya stops in Puerto Morelos too.
Its reef, a national park since 1998 and part of the second-largest barrier reef in the world. It sits close to the beach: near town the lagoon inside it is only about 100 to 1,200 m wide and 2 to 8 m deep, so it's an easy half-day snorkel (park fee about 125 pesos a day, 2026). Beyond the reef, it's a quieter, slower-paced alternative to Playa and Cancún with a small-village vibe.
