Frequently asked questions
Bacalar is 4-5 hours south of Cancún by car or ADO bus. The fastest way is to fly to Chetumal (40 minutes south of Bacalar) — but Chetumal has limited routes. Most visitors road-trip down, often pairing Bacalar with a Tulum stop on the way.
November to April is dry season with the clearest lagoon water and the cleanest sky. June-October is rainy season — the lagoon water can turn cloudy after heavy rains, but tourist density drops significantly. Hurricane risk peaks August-October.
Two nights minimum — Bacalar is slow by design. A typical itinerary: arrive late day 1, lagoon tour day 2, kayak / cenote / Mayan ruins day 3, leave day 4. Most visitors who try to do it as a day trip from Tulum regret it.
The town has a public balneario but it's small. Most lagoon access is via the boutique hotels along the shore (some sell day-passes USD $20-40). The 'Cenote Cocalitos' on the south end has a famous swing and microbialitos (ancient stromatolite formations).
