Las Coloradas & Rio Lagartos Boat Tour Day Trip from Merida

Most bookedFree cancellation
About this tour

The day starts at Las Coloradas, where a certified guide leads the group along the lakeside paths beside the pink lagoons. The color is a product of algae and brine shrimp in the hypersaline water — conditions that shift with light throughout the day. The elevated viewpoint is on the route, giving a broad look at the salt flats and surrounding mangroves. All entrance fees are bundled into your booking price.

Next, the tour moves into Rio Lagartos for a boat tour through the protected biosphere reserve. Wildlife density is high here: active flamingo colonies share the estuary with crocodiles, eagles, and shore birds. Your guide covers the species in both English and Spanish. Partway through the ride, the boat pulls ashore at a clay-deposit beach where passengers exfoliate with the natural sediment — one of the more unusual things to do near Merida Mexico and a standard stop on any Rio Lagartos flamingo tour.

The final stop is Cancunito, an undeveloped stretch of coast with clear shallow water and no resort infrastructure. Before the return drive to Merida, there is a culinary stop near the Rio Lagartos waterfront. Total running time: 13 hours door to door. At $118 per person with all tickets and taxes pre-paid, this tour handles the logistics that make Yucatan day trips from Merida difficult to arrange independently — no rental car, no ticket queues.

Local tip

The 7 a.m. departure gets you to Las Coloradas well before midday crowds build. Bring reef-safe sunscreen, water shoes for the clay stop at Rio Lagartos, and a change of clothes — the sediment clings. Both English and Spanish are spoken throughout with no separate track to request. All admission fees are pre-paid, so carry cash only for the optional restaurant stop near the Rio Lagartos waterfront.

I've done a lot of day trips from Merida, and most of them rush you past the good stuff. This one doesn't — the clay exfoliation stop at Rio Lagartos alone is worth the price of admission, and Cancunito is the kind of undeveloped coastline that's getting harder to find. If you want one day that actually earns its price tag, this boat tour is the one.
